Congratulations to Lucille Vaal, senior at Springs Valley High School and daughter of Robert and Donna Vaal. Lucy was chosen from 33 applicants as this year’s Lilly Community Scholarship cohort for Orange County, following a lengthy point-driven selection process, timed essay, and personal interview.
Word was received recently from Independent Colleges of Indiana, the non-profit organization chosen by Lilly Endowment to administer the scholarship program, that Lucy had been approved as the cohort for Orange County. She plans to study Psychology at DePauw University, with the ultimate goal of gaining her doctorate in psychology or pursuing a career in law.
“As a child who has experienced life in the foster system and gone through the process of adoption, individuals in the fields of psychology and law have made a lasting impact on my resilience in overcoming drama,” she wrote in her essay. “My greatest hope is to one day do the same for other children in similar positions.”
While in school, Lucy has been a member of the Student Council, SADD, FCCLA, FFA, SVHS Academic Team, and the OCCF Youth Council.
